What Your Ankle Pain Is Telling You

You have arrived at the "ankle pain" page of my site and I would first like to say, welcome. I am assuming that you are here because you are currently experiencing ankle pain pain or perhaps you have just stumbled upon it. In either instance, you are at a great place to find out why you have the pain, what is causing it, and how to treat it. Let us now get straight to the point of why you have this pain, which youdon't know how to relieve, or maybe you are not even aware of what may be causing this discomfort.

Did It Begin Suddenly

Has you pain begun just recently, maybe following strenuous exercise or a slight "fall"? If this is the case, it is probably just a little tweak or a slight sprain and should subside with ice applied for 30 minutes at a time and rest. If pain does not begin subsiding after a day or so, I would suggest you see your physician ASAP so as not to cause any further damage. This pain could be signaling something more serious and if left untreated, may become more permanent and possibly effect your quality of life.

Has It Been Building Over Time?

If this pain has been building over time, we would once again recommend you see a doctor to get a diagnosis and seek physical therapy as it may be a rip or a tear in the cartilage or could even be a partial fracture to your bone. With one minor move or twist this can easily become a very painful break and take longer to heal.

How To Determine A Severe Sprain Or Break

There are a few ways to determine if you have a severe injury to your ankle. If you can move the limb, this usually means the bone is not broken. Do you find it is just "hanging" there and immobile? Chances are, it is broken and needs immediate medical attention. Can you apply pressure on it? If this seems to be the case, it is a positive sign that is is probably not broken and you still retain strength in it. Also, try to take a few steps and walk it off without causing severe pain. If this does cause undue pain, rest and try again in short intervals. Remember, you shouldn't be applying too much pressure on it if it is painful as this can cause more intense injury
